Towns and regional authorities in Switzerland, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Japan and Spain are offering financial incentives worth up to 70,000 euros to attract new residents, Business Insider reported.
Local governments are funding the grants to rescue depopulated communities from economic decline and fill workforce shortages. However, each scheme imposes strict conditions on applicants, meaning financial aid is never handed out without obligations.
Swiss Alpine payouts in Albinen
The small village of Albinen, located in the canton of Valais in the Swiss Alps, offers adult relocators 25,000 Swiss francs, which equals approximately 30,412 dollars, alongside an additional 10,000 francs for every child. Local leaders introduced the scheme in 2017 after the municipal population plummeted below 300 residents. The settlement lacks a school, a bank branch and a post office, leaving a single pub as its remaining social hub.
To qualify for the funding, applicants must be under 45 years of age and purchase a home in Albinen valued at more than 200,000 Swiss francs. Beneficiaries must reside in the village for a minimum of 10 years and secure Swiss citizenship. Anyone who departs before completing the decade must return the money in full. Beat Jost, the mayor of Albinen, said the municipality received around 100 inquiries per day after the program went viral online in 2023.
Greek island stipends on Antikythera
On the island of Antikythera, located between Crete and mainland Greece in the Aegean Sea, local leaders are offering families with three or more children a monthly allowance of 500 euros for three years. The program also provides successful candidates with free housing and food supplies.
Officials first launched the initiative in 2019 when the resident population of Antikythera dropped to 24 people. The project faced several pauses before resuming in 2023 with financial backing from the Church of Greece. However, as of January 2026, no new families have moved to the island because residential construction remains underway, although local authorities continue to process incoming applications.
Renovation grants in Sardinia
The Italian island of Sardinia is offering grants of 15,000 euros to individuals who relocate to municipalities with populations under 5,000 people. Despite having a total population of nearly 1.6 million residents, the Mediterranean territory is attempting to reverse an ongoing population drain from its smaller inland towns.
The financial incentive is specifically designated for home renovation work. In addition, local authorities provide 600 euros per month for the birth or adoption of a first child, followed by 400 euros per month for each subsequent child. Beneficiaries must register Sardinia as their official permanent residence within 18 months of moving.
Offshore incentives in Ireland
In Ireland, the national government introduced the Our Living Islands initiative in 2023 to support remote coastal communities. The scheme awards grants of up to 70,000 euros to individuals who move to one of 30 offshore islands that are not connected to the mainland by bridges or causeways.
The funds are distributed through a dedicated restoration scheme aimed at repairing residential properties constructed prior to 1993. Irish government officials stated that the main objective of the investment is to ensure that sustainable, vibrant communities can continue living and thriving on coastal islands for many years into the future.
Rural relocation subsidies in Japan
The Japanese government has operated a rural relocation program since 2019 to relieve overpopulation pressure in Tokyo. Under the scheme, households that move from the capital to rural areas receive 1 million yen, which equals roughly 6,400 dollars, while single applicants receive 600,000 yen. Individuals who establish a business in their new municipality can claim an additional 1 million yen.
Foreign nationals can easily purchase rural real estate in Japan, but candidates must hold permanent or long-term resident status to receive the government grants. Standard work visas do not qualify applicants for financial compensation.
Housing support in La Rioja
In Spain, the Revive initiative in the northern province of La Rioja provides financial assistance to relocators under the age of 45 who move to municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. Payouts range from 20,000 euros for towns with between 2,001 and 5,000 residents up to 40,000 euros for villages with populations below 500.
Recipients must allocate the funds toward buying or renovating residential property. The scheme requires all participants to maintain their primary residence in the target municipality for at least five years.
Global quality of life rankings
The relocation incentives coincide with recent quality of life evaluations published by global database platform Numbeo for 2026. The Hague, located in the Netherlands, claimed the top rank as the world's most liveable city, with European municipalities occupying every position in the top 10.
Ukrainian cities also featured in the global index, with Lviv ranking in 218th place and the capital city of Kyiv placing 253rd in the overall standings.
