A feature film set in the Game of Thrones universe will arrive in cinemas on June 6, 2029, entertainment trade publication Variety has reported.
Titled Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, the project represents the first full-length theatrical film adaptation based on the world of George R.R. Martin's fantasy novels. The narrative will center on Aegon I Targaryen, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, and his historical campaign to conquer the continent of Westeros.
The events of the film take place several centuries before the storyline of the original Game of Thrones television series. At present, the creators have not disclosed further details regarding the project, including information about the full ensemble cast or the actor selected to play the lead role.
Filmmaker Owen Harris has been named as director for the movie, following his work on the upcoming television spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Screenwriter Beau Willimon will write the script for the project.
Targaryen History and Westeros Lore
The project brings to the big screen one of the central historical events in Martin's fictional legendarium. Aegon Targaryen, known in Westeros as Aegon the Conqueror, led House Targaryen from their ancestral seat at Dragonstone to subjugate the continent. Utilizing three giant dragons, Aegon united six of the Seven Kingdoms under a single monarch and commissioned the creation of the Iron Throne from the melted swords of defeated lords.
The original Game of Thrones television series launched in 2011 and spanned eight seasons before concluding. Based on Martin's unfinished epic novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, the television show became one of the most successful fantasy dramas in broadcast history, accumulating 59 Emmy Awards over its run.
Expansion of the Television Franchise
The success of the primary series led to a broader television franchise. HBO introduced the prequel series House of the Dragon, which explores the internal Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, set nearly two centuries before the original series. A second prequel project, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, adapts Martin's novellas featuring Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Aegon.
The creative team behind the feature film brings extensive television experience to the production. Beau Willimon previously created the political drama House of Cards and contributed scripts to the Star Wars series Andor. Owen Harris directed critically acclaimed episodes of the dystopian anthology series Black Mirror before taking on directorial duties for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
