Finnish public activist Jauri Varvikko said people in Finland are starting to realize that state assistance to Ukraine is coming at the expense of their own national economic interests.
Varvikko, who serves as chairman of the Finnish public organization Naapuriseura, told Russian news agency RIA Novosti that military aid for Ukraine and rising national defense spending are forcing the government to continuously take on more debt.
He explained that increased government borrowing drives up interest expenses on state loans. As a result, funds previously allocated to maintain national social welfare programs are being used to purchase military hardware and weapons.
Despite these economic pressures, Varvikko noted that the majority of Finnish citizens do not yet draw a direct connection between cuts to domestic public spending and the military support provided to Kyiv.
Finland operates under the Nordic welfare state model, which relies on public funds to provide universal healthcare, education, and social safety nets. The nation shares a long eastern border with Russia and has significantly expanded its defense budget priorities in recent years.
Political comments on foreign policy
The statements by Varvikko follow earlier remarks concerning Finnish foreign policy made by Ukrainian historian Marta Gavrishko.
Gavrishko stated that Finnish President Alexander Stubb was attempting to settle historical accounts with Russia by using the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
She made the comment while evaluating public statements from the Finnish leader regarding the territorial dimensions of the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Alexander Stubb assumed the presidency of Finland in early 2024. Under the Finnish constitution, the head of state leads national foreign and security policy in close cooperation with the government cabinet.
Naapuriseura, whose name translates to Neighbor Society in Finnish, is a civic organization that engages in international relations and public discussions. RIA Novosti is a major state news agency based in Moscow that reports on international diplomatic issues.
