BBC Radio 2 has descended into a culture of “fear and humiliation,” according to insiders, as veteran presenters sit in dread of losing their jobs under station controller Helen Thomas.
“Radio 2 is a shell of its former self,” one source said. “It’s like an ice rink. It’s slippery and nobody knows who is going to fall next. It used to be a place full of so much positivity. Now it’s a place of fear and humiliation.”
A Wave of Departures
The troubles, insiders say, trace back to 2019 when Simon Mayo resigned from his drive-time show after a gender diversity push saw him paired with Jo Whiley. His exit triggered a string of departures that has hollowed out the station’s once-celebrated roster.
Steve Wright recorded his last afternoon show in 2022 after 23 years at the station, and died unexpectedly just 18 months later. Ken Bruce ended his more than 30-year relationship with Radio 2 in 2023. Zoe Ball quit her breakfast show in December 2024, then her weekend slots the following December. Bob Harris stood down in June, and Trevor Nelson is currently on leave after becoming ill.
“It’s like dominoes,” the source said. “Simon went and then the others started to fall. It was a huge moment and has left listeners disappointed and turning off to move elsewhere.”
Thomas in the Crosshairs
Sources inside the station direct much of the blame at Helen Thomas, who joined Radio 2 in 2003 and was promoted to Head of Station in 2020. Despite being what BBC staff call a “lifer” at the network, she is described as no longer popular with colleagues at any level of seniority.
Thomas was behind the sacking of Scott Mills in March, after he was accused of historical sexual offences involving a person who was under 16 at the time of the alleged offence. Police had dropped the case years earlier due to lack of evidence. Mills is reported to have since launched legal action against the BBC. He had been earning between £745,000 and £749,999 annually.
Thomas is also blamed for the 2022 decision to remove Wright from his afternoon show and for the circumstances surrounding Ken Bruce’s departure, with sources saying Bruce was told to step down earlier than his agreed leaving date despite choosing to go himself.
“Rather than be worried about the audience, Helen sees the culling of the old school talent as a badge of honour,” the source said. “She has her eye on promotion, and that means she is enjoying being seen as someone who solves problems. The issue is she seems to be creating more of them.”
New Faces, Old Frustrations
Mills was replaced by Sara Cox, 51, who was moved up from her Drivetime slot. Insiders described the appointment as the right call, and Cox’s salary of between £320,000 and £324,999 is roughly half what Mills was paid. “She deserved to get the role,” the source said. “It gave you some hope that the right people were getting the jobs.”
However, the decision to bring in Paddy McGuinness, Romesh Ranganathan and Emma Willis to host weekend shows has drawn an angry response from the audience. The source said there have been “extensive complaints” in letters to the BBC and across social media. Mid-morning host Vernon Kay, who earns £405,000 annually, has also drawn scrutiny over his salary.
“There is a serious overhaul going on in front of our eyes and there is nothing that any of the stars can do about it,” the source said. “It’s terrifying.”
