‘Barbie’ Releases First Teaser Featuring Margot Robbie as Mattel Doll and Big Tribute to ‘2001’

If we had been told a while back that a live-action Barbie doll movie would be the most anticipated movie of the year, we might not have believed it. But here we are. And it is that just take a look at the names behind the project to understand the reason for so much waiting: Margot Robbie plays the iconic Mattel doll in a film she produces and is directed by Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”), with his screenplay and that of Noah Baumbach (“Marriage Story”). A renowned team that promised a truly amazing film.

‘Barbie’ arrives in July 2023 and, after a long wait, the first teaser of the film has finally arrived, in which we see Robbie in action as the blonde doll in her plastic world and Ryan Gosling as her eternal boyfriend, Ken.

Up until now, we’ve only had to settle for two official stills from the film. One by Robbie (released in April of this year) and one by Gosling (released in June). This first advance was made to beg, but we can say that it was definitely worth it. The teaser begins with a surprising homage to ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, the sci-fi classic directed by Stanley Kubrick., in which we see a group of girls playing with dolls, just like the monkeys with bones in the 60’s movie. Suddenly, the girls see giant legs appear (like a monolith), which belong to Barbie. Robbie then appears dressed in the classic bathing suit of the first Barbie in history, the vision of which causes the girls to destroy their normal dolls.

In addition to this fantastic introduction, in which Gerwig humorously captures the importance of the doll in the story, the preview shows us Barbie on her back, in a pink plaid dress, looking out over her city, where the same color predominates and you can see other dolls in their houses, which look like toys. In addition to other fleeting and colorful shots in which we see Gosling’s Ken together with Kingsley Ben-Adir and Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae, Simu Liu and Robbie in Disco Barbie mode. We will also find ourselves in the massive and stellar cast of “Barbie” Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Scott Evans, Kate McKinnon and America Ferrera, among many others.

Double bill for true spectators

If neither change their plans, ‘Barbie’ will coincide on the bill with Christopher Nolan’s new ‘Oppenheimer’, which opens the same day: on July 21, 2023. A double date that promises an epic summer confrontation and that sees the Internet taking sides in a battle where good humor prevails for now. Let’s hope it stays that way when the moment of truth comes, because we will both be supportive there.
