The PGA Awards today announced the nominees for Outstanding Documentary Producer, a list notorious for a flurry of snide comments and surprises.
Seven films received nominations, including Anything that breathes, Shaunak Sen’s documentary about two brothers in Delhi, India, who have dedicated their lives to rehabilitating birds of prey that have fallen victim to the city’s polluted air. It won Best Feature at last weekend’s IDA Documentary Awards, so its nomination for the PGA Awards is no surprise.
However, it was omitted from the PGA list All the beauty and the bloodshed, director Laura Poitras’ strong Oscar nominee, which the New York Film Critics Circle honored as Best Nonfiction Film on Friday. He also nominated a PGA Award monday dreamBrett Morgen’s David Bowie documentary, which is by far the highest-grossing documentary of the year in cinemas, and Good night OppieRyan White’s documentary about NASA’s Mars rovers by Amblin Entertainment.
Amaze, No comparison, Kathryn Ferguson’s documentary about Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor, received a PGA nomination today. The film was well reviewed, did particularly well in the UK and Ireland, but did not feature prominently in many pre-Oscar documentary competitions. He previously received two Critics’ Choice Documentary Award nominations – for Best Music Documentary and Best Archive Documentary, and a Cinematography nomination for the upcoming Cinema Eye Honors.
Two-time DGA award winner Matthew Heineman saw his latest film, decrease, honored with a PGA nomination. His documentary takes an in-depth look at the final months of the US war in Afghanistan and what happened to the Afghan National Army after the US withdrawal.

NatGeo scores a second nominee with fire of love, director Sara Dosa’s film about a French couple whose commitment to volcanic exploration cost them their lives. The PGA noted, “These films are currently undergoing individual producer eligibility review,” so it did not release production credits as part of its announcement. The nominees for sports, children’s and short television programs will be announced this Friday. Nominees for feature film, animated film, TV series/special and TV/streaming movie will be announced on Thursday, January 12, 2023. Winners will be honored Saturday at the 34th annual Producers Guild of America Awards Ceremony. , February 25, 2023.
earlier in the year, summer of the soul won the PGA Award for Documentary Feature, an honor that went to producers Joseph Patel, David Dinerstein and Robert Fyvolent. Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s documentary won the Oscar.
