Christopher Nolan recreated an atomic explosion in “Oppenheimer” without CGI

This morning of December 12, Universal surprised with the reveal of the first images of ‘Oppenheimer’, the new film starring Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt. However, the tape’s most impressive reveal came from the hand of Christopher Nolan, who confessed that for the tape’s story he recreated an atomic explosion without the aid of special effects.

In an interview for Total Film (via Games Radar), Christopher Nolan said he recreated the atomic explosion in ‘oppenheimer’ without the aid of CGI: “I’m thinking of recreating the Trinity test [la primera detonación de arma nuclear de la historia] without the use of computer graphics it was a great challenge to face”, commented the director of ‘Interstellar’, via IndieWire.

“Andrew Jackson, my visual effects supervisor […] I was looking at how we could actually make many of the images in the film, from the depiction of quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself,” said the director.There were huge practical challenges [en ‘Oppenheimer’]” Christopher Nolan said.

Also, Nolan noticed this ‘oppenheimer’ consist “one of the more challenging projects I took on in terms of scale and in terms of finding the breadth of the story,” the director added. “But he had an amazing team and they really stepped up. the results and as I’m putting the film together, I’m happy with what my team has been able to achieve.”

What is the story of ‘Oppenheimer’ about?

The director was based on the story of ‘American Prometheus’, a biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. ‘Oppenheimer’ follows the life of the head of the Los Alamos Laboratory, as well as being the director of the Manhattan Project, where nuclear weapons were first developed for World War II.

He was also the supervisor of the Trinity Test, where an atomic bomb was detonated for the first time successfully in the New Mexico desert. Cillian Murphy is the one who will play the scientist, while Emily Blunt will play Katherine, a biologist and botanist, as well as being Robert’s wife. The rest of the cast is completed with Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Casey Affleck, among many others.

“Oppenheimer was shot with a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections of IMAX analog black and white photography,” said the director. Christopher Nolan will release his new film on September 21st July 2023.
