After all the crazy hype surrounding Dwayne Johnson’S Black Adam before its release, it actually ended up being a disappointment. He hasn’t done much to change the hierarchy in the DC Universe, something Johnson has been promising since before he even started shooting the film. Now, it’s been reported that the film could lose up to $100 million.
Black Adam it grossed $387 million worldwide at the box office after seven weeks in theaters. Variety explains that after the budget and marketing costs for the film, it needed to make an estimated $600 million worldwide to break even and surpass any kind of profit.
Box office experts say the film will land with less than $400 million globally and estimates from “rival execs with knowledge of similar productions,” the film could lose as much as $100 million in its theatrical run.
As you might expect, Warner Bros. sources are contesting these numbers. But the fact of the matter is that the film didn’t do as well as everyone hoped. I expected the movie to be much better than it was. I was thrilled! But I ended up walking through the theater feeling let down.
Black Adam was released on VOD a month after the film’s theatrical release, and it’s doing well there, as it topped the VOD charts. But its availability on VOD may have also contributed to its drop at the box office.
I don’t expect to see the return of Black Adam under the guidance of James Gunn And Peter Safran.
