The big and surprising news out of Disney this week was this Bob Iger he returned to lead Disney as its CEO, replacing him Bob Chapek.. Some new details have emerged about what was going on behind the scenes with the Disney board and how they had been trying to fire Chapek for quite some time. It’s very obvious they weren’t happy with him.
In a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney’s board actually wanted to appoint one of its own members and offered it to Nike chairman Mark Parker, asking him to fill the role of interim CEO while they looked for someone to take over the role permanently. . He refused, however. General Motors executive Mary Barra also supported Chapek’s replacement at a meeting in June.
Chapek didn’t end up being the leader they thought he would be. He was throwing the ball all over the place and was never really welcomed by the Disney fan community. When it came to Chapek’s actual release process, one source described him as “insane.”
The source told the outlet, “He failed to say hello or say, ‘I’ve decided to resign. I bet he broke Chapek’s firing [Peter] Rice in seven minutes. They called [Chapek] and said, ‘You’re out. Our lawyers will call your lawyers.’ No statement from him, no comment from him, no grace. He’s fucking crazy.”
Iger knew this would be the case from the start. It is explained that his “disapproval of Chapek was no secret to anyone. He is said to have warned at a board meeting in December 2021 in New York, shortly before leaving the company, that Disney’s culture could be turned negatively and quickly. That was the last time you spoke to Chapek.”
As for Iger, in the last few months leading up to this one, he’s been working on a book and talking to the producer Brian Grasser on a film based on the book Lucky 666: The Impossible Mission That Changed Warfare in the Pacific. He was also in advanced talks for a key role in RedBird Capital before Disney asked him to return.
Now he’s back at Disney and working to put things back in order.
