‘Enola Holmes 2’: everything that means the scene after the credits and that fundamental introduction for the future of the saga

The two “Enola Holmes” films are loosely inspired by the novels of Nancy Springuer and are played by Millie Bobby Brown as Enola and Henry Cavill as her older brother, the famous Sherlock Holmes. The latter character’s adaptation differs from traditional detective interpretations, showing a more emotionally vulnerable Holmes who has not yet met his “elementary, dear Watson”. The recent premiere of “Enola Holmes 2” has not only meant a second episode of the young detective, but has also opened the doors to a possible third episode and who knows if the birth of a long saga of unsolved cases that go beyond the usual trilogy.

SPOILER attention!

* If you haven’t seen ‘Enola Holmes 2’ yet, don’t read on! Let’s go over the twists and turns and the biggest surprises of the finale.

The little glimpse into the future of the franchise is presented in the purest Marvel Studios style, with a scene after the credits that shows something important for the future of the saga. Said key point is, no more, no less, a new incarnation of Dr. John Watson, one of the most beloved and popular characters in the Holmes universe. As the film progresses, Enola realizes that her brother also needs friends around him, especially a roommate, according to her. Determined to carry on her idea, Enola makes an appointment to meet Sherlock on Thursday at 4pm, but doesn’t show up. Instead, she sends a potential partner, Dr. Watson, who also lied about his Sherlock looking for someone else to relocate to 221B Baker Street.

This new version of Watson is played by Himesh Patel, best known for his role in “EastEnders”. This character plays a fairly important role in the “Enola Holmes” books, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Watson’s weight in a third installment was of the same magnitude. The scene after the credits of “Enola Holmes 2” reveals that Watson will become Sherlock’s companion and there is also evidence that probably points to the Strand Magazine, the magazine where the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock ). if Holmes’s friend had written them.

The new version of Watson will have a different relationship with Sherlock than usual, in Conan Doyle’s stories, Watson had no idea what he was hunting for when he moved in with Sherlock. In fact, he began to see his strange roommate as a mystery and little by little he discovered the truth, that he was living with the man who is considered the first private investigator in the world. However, Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes is already world famous for him, which means this Watson probably doesn’t think Sherlock is just another normal man. This new version of Patel has to be even more adventurous than the one written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle if he knows what he’s getting into and is still ready.

On a possible third installment

The “Enola Holmes” films exploit the social change in the real world of Victorian London, so in “Enola Holmes” there was the Great Reform Bill and in “Enola Holmes 2” the match strike that took place in 1888. For now, the franchise tends to focus on Victorian attitudes towards women, but the introduction of Patel’s Watson, a non-Caucasian actor, could mean that future films will explore ethnicity-related social issues. This would create some interesting and unusual stories, as education on racism in Britain tends to start with William Wilberforce’s role in opposing the transatlantic slave trade, before joining the United States Civil Rights Movement directly. It would be interesting to see how ‘Enola Holmes 3’ brings to light parts of British history that are often overlooked.

Netflix has yet to officially confirm a third film, but the latter achieved similar levels of good reviews from critics than the former, so seeing a third wouldn’t be strange. Whatever happens, the post-credits scene seems to mean that the creative team has plans for the future and that Watson will be an important part of it.
