Recently, Netflix just included the film on its platform ‘The stranger’a true crime based on a creepy true storyabout a crime in Australia in 2003. Starring Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris and directed by Thomas M. Wright, the film was released on October 19, 2022, being a self-published hit.

Like other Netflix productions based on real events like “Dahmer” or “The Great Flood”. The stranger is based on the case of Daniel Morcombe, a 13-year-old boy who disappeared in 2003, waiting at the bus stop in Palmwoods, Australia. The young man was on his way to buy Christmas presents for his family.

Subsequently, the Australian authorities and the child’s family launched a joint investigation. When one of the police officers investigated, he did undercover work, fooling a suspect after gaining his trust. It was from here that he managed to get him to plead guilty to the kidnapping and murder of the child, managing to imprison him.

The suspect was Brett Petter Cowan, who claimed he was the one who kidnapped and killed Daniel Morcombe, for whom he was sentenced by the Australian government to life in prison in 2014, with a minimum term of 20 years without parole. That said, Daniel’s family formed the Daniel Morecombe Foundation.

The controversy with the Morecombe family after the premiere of ‘The Stranger’

“The Stranger” is based on Kate Kyriacou’s 2015 book titled “The Sting: The Undercover Operation that Caught Morcombe’s Killer”. Even if the film tried do not mention any of the surnames Morecombe, aside from the fact that it’s not a faithful representation of the whole story, the boy’s family has declared their dissatisfaction with the tape.

Through a social media post from the Daniel Morecombe Foundation, he described the film as “morally corrupt” and “a cruel, insensitive and selfish theft of money”.

‘The Stranger’ can be found on Netflix from October 19, 2022, where it joins the list of movies and series based on real events on the streaming platform. A format that the company has started to bet on in recent months, and it has been wonderful, given that these productions have led its Top Ten.
