Season 5 of Cobra Kai was released last weekend and it was another terrific season with Daniel, Johnny and the rest of the team. I got to see Season 5 early and thought it was a great return to the action and storytelling we expect from the creators of the series. I also got to sit down with the cast to talk about what happened with the story, and I asked William Zabkawho plays Johnny Lawrence, on my favorite episode with him this season, “Downward Spiral”.

Johnny decides he needs some extra cash this season and is having a hard time finding a new job. So he discovers the Uber scene and decides to give it a try. He not only drives like a maniac, but he is rude to his clients and does pretty mean things at work. When I asked him to shoot this episode, Zabka said:

“It was so much fun to shoot! It’s one of my favorite things I’ve done on the show ever. I love Johnny without karate, the kind of Johnny who tries to understand life and make ends meet. He’s kind of gone back to Season 1 when he’s a handyman, cleaning gutters and hanging TVs, and now he’s doing Uber. And he does it because no one will take him seriously for a button up job, no one will hire him for a suit and tie. So he has to do it reluctantly. He doesn’t really understand it, and it’s still in his world of him. You know? He doesn’t know who Billie Eilish is, so he plays Billy Idol. And he takes this time as a joyful ride around the city, because he doesn’t care who he’s driving. So it was super fun. It was a lot of fun to play ”.

He went on to talk about the ending of those scenes, where Johnny calls a woman a bitch for only giving him a star because he had beer in the car, and revealed that the woman was the author of the show, Ashley Darnall.

“Actually, the writer of that episode is who comes out at the end, when I say ‘A star ?! Why was there beer in the car ?! ‘ You know, that was Ashley, and she was the author of the episode, and she was like, ‘I want to be in the car when Johnny Lawrence calls me an asshole!’ I said “Are you sure?” and she said “Yes” so it was fun. I could do it all day. I love those moments. He is completely disconnected from the world of karate. It’s just Johnny with no one looking at him. That’s who he is. He is very funny and I’m glad you liked it ”.

That was my third time interviewing the cast of Cobra Kai, so I guess you can say we’re best friends now. I love that show and everyone involved, and I can’t wait to know what happens next. If you haven’t finished watching Season 5 yet, check out Netflix. It is that good. And if so, what was your favorite moment or scene this season?
