Throughout the history of cinema and streaming we have known a series of series, films and documentaries that have told the moments of the British royal family and that have sparked some of the strongest controversies. ‘The Crown’ (Netflix), just to name the most recent and which aroused the chagrin of the Royal Crown, even if, to its credit, it was not the only one; Years ago, Queen Elizabeth banned a documentary that she herself had approved.

After the banning of this documentary, the world sparked even more interest in seeing it, wondering what reasons Queen Elizabeth II had for banning it, what was going on in it that she didn’t want anyone else to see, even if, for that matter, it was definitely too much afternoon.

“Royal Family” aka “The Royal Family”, is the name of the documentary banned by the British crown, which after arousing the anger of Philip of Edinburgh, led the monarch to make the decision to completely censor it. Its partial or total reproduction on television or any other digital medium was strictly limited (but not forever).

It was 1969 when, on the occasion of Charles’ coronation as Prince of Wales, they decided to record a documentary on the most intimate life of the British royal family, which would allow the public to get closer to their daily and domestic moments; the day to day of the members of the crown is exposed for the first time to all, the privacy had been forgotten, at least for this then approved production.

‘The royal family’ was broadcast by the BBC on June 21 of the same year, just as it is recreated in the third season of the series ‘The Crow’ (Netflix). In her broadcast he won an audience that at the time exceeded 30 million viewers, everyone expected to know more about the family, especially since her voice was unique and almost exclusively heard in Christmas speeches.

Therefore, this sparked the curiosity of the public to learn more about the Queen of England’s family life, her married life and much more. The banned documentary included scenes with Prince Charles, Princess Anne, their consort, etc. Beyond the fact that the public was happy to know in detail what was happening inside the castle, there were those who spoke out against it, and what appeared to be an approach with the British turned into a real nightmare.

At the time, David Attenbourgh had warned his friend, Queen Elizabeth II, that the documentary was just a way to expose himself and put the monarchy at risk. Others have criticized the way of exposing the intimacy of the royal family, Crown supporters were dissatisfiedand although it had served to destroy some myths around its members, it was garnering nasty comments.

The royal family has been exposed, although the BBC only wanted to humanize them in front of the public

It seemed that all was lost, the royal family had been exposed and the members of the Crown were unhappy. To correct her mistake, in the same year as her release, the queen did not go out to give her traditional Christmas speech, it being understood that by doing so she would be overexposing herself to her family.

Although this was never confirmed as such, the transmission and reproduction of the ‘Royal Family’ was prohibited, a decision which, according to legend, would have been made after its second issue in 1972. The rumors grew because, in fact, the documentary hasn’t been seen since, if anything, some clips of a few seconds were broadcast for reference.

The documentary “The Royal Family” seemed to have been forgotten or at least as a banned production by Queen Elizabeth; the censorship is over when someone, Filippo StranieriIt occurred to him to upload it in full to YouTube in early 2021, since 1972 the documentary had never been seen in its entirety.

The idea of making a documentary about the British royal family was simply based on the BBC’s intention to humanize its members. Its launch was huge and controversial for the Windsor’s intramural passage. And in the end, it was only the documentary banned by Queen Elizabeth II, but that we could already see.
