Countries continue to criminalize homosexuality and restrict streaming content

The restrictions and requests were made public until today, September 7, 2022, when the Egyptian Supreme Council for Media Regulation said in a statement that it had issued a series of “rules and licenses for media platforms. electronic content such as Netflix and Disney +”so that they commit themselves” to the social values ​​of the state “, without offering details on the measures.

This warning to Netflix was issued the day after Arab countries in the Persian Gulf asked the platform to remove “contrary to Islamic values” scenes and audiovisual material from its children’s content and even threatened to take legal action.

The controversy with Netflix broke out especially in Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative countries in the Middle East. Saudi state television broadcast pixelated images of a scene from the animated series Jurassic World, in which two girls kiss, causing a wave of condemnation in this country that criminalizes homosexuality.

Arab countries also banned the screening of Pixar’s animated film “Year of Light” last June because it included a scene where two lesbian characters kiss. Muslim-majority countries, to a large extent, edit content they consider inappropriate, such as homosexuality or sex scenes, series, movies, and even video games.
