The controversy surrounding Marvel Studios due to complaints from many special effects workers is not good news for Kevin Feige’s company. Marvel Cinematic Universe projects multiply over the years and many times the schedule is impossible for visual effects artists to follow. This situation has been denounced by the industry since a Marvel worker reported the company’s mistreatment in a thread on Reddit. The last link in this chain of complaints and criticisms came in the form of a bad memory: Marvel forgot to tell the “Avengers: Endgame” visual effects team that they had moved the release date.

The Gizmodo website has collected many stories of special effects artists angry at the treatment they suffered from Marvel. One of them, by an artist named David, says so He has worked on major projects such as “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”. While he claimed that working on James Gunn’s film was one of his favorite experiences of him, he also commented on the moment when Marvel would “forget” to tell the team that they were bringing forward the release date of “Endgame”. Both he and the rest of his classmates had to find out from the news.
“The worst came when ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ were released”says David. “They actually moved the release date by a month, but they didn’t tell us. I remember I was with my team and one of my artists walked up and said, ‘Hey, did you see that?’ An article showed it to me that said Marvel had moved the release date by a month. So we found out in the press that we had a month less to work on all those shots.”.
“Crazy requests”
Industry criticism of Marvel has been mounting over the months. Without going further, Joe Pavlo, an Emmy-winning visual artist who worked on “Guardians of the Galaxy”, gave an interview to The Guardian a few days ago talking about the practices “unhealthy” that the studio had towards the digital effects industry.
“It was chaos, madness”Pavlo recalls his experience with Marvel, adding: “The visual effects industry is full of great people with a lot of goodwill and love, but when the time comes, there’s nothing you can do when your back is cornered and Disney is making crazy demands of you. All that goodwill wears off when they start to change everything and decide they are going to replace a character with another actor or they want to completely change the environment: they want to be in a pizzeria as much as they want to be in a cornfield. It can be so extreme at the last minute. “.
