Broadway theaters will continue their recently adopted public policies until at least August, the Broadway League said.
An optional mask policy was announced in June for the month of July, in which the public is encouraged but not required to wear a mask. This deadline has been extended until August “and until further notice”, the League said today.
The optional mask policy “is consistent with New York and state guidelines,” the league said in a statement.
The news comes as New York and the rest of the country are seeing a spike in Covid cases due to the omicron BA.5 sub-variant. Cases tend to be less severe than in the past, and local news reports that mask use on public transport has decreased significantly, despite the requirement. Earlier this week, the New York Department of Transportation announced that the Staten Island Ferry will operate at 20-minute intervals during peak hours, instead of the usual 15, due to staff shortages caused by positive covid tests. .
