Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said today, “All of the information available today indicates that we need to prepare for the possibility of a significant transmission in the coming weeks.”

That says something considering LA reported 6,529 days of covid infections yesterday, the highest the country has seen since early February, and already has a 7-day test positive rate of 13.8%. That’s almost a full point in 24 hours, up from 12.9% yesterday, and more than double the 6.5% two weeks ago. For a number that is not just a percentage of total tests, but a 7-day average, these are huge jumps.
Ferrer said the county’s test numbers are lower because they don’t include the results of the over-the-counter kits many currently use.
The increased daily test positivity rate “reflects higher rates of transmission likely associated with infectious Covid sub-variants, as well as reduced routine testing in schools”, etc. it included many people who would not normally be tested.
The 7-day average number of new Covid-related hospitalizations is 109 per day. Ferrer called it a “staggering increase” from the 84 new cases per day reported last week. The average new hospitalization rate today is also 78% higher than a month ago.
Now there are still concerns about the increasing pressure on the health system.
The number of new Kovid cases in district hospitals rose to 808, the highest level in 4 months since February 3. The average 7-day rate of such hospitalizations is currently 8.1 per 100,000 population. This is up from yesterday’s 6.6 days of new Covid entry per 100,000 population. If that number reaches 10 per 100,000 and stays there for two weeks, Los Angeles public health officials said they will restore the public mask requirement in enclosed spaces. According to the current forecast, this will happen on July 19.
But there are other variables as well.
