Before Lucasfilm and Disney decide to do a Obi-Wan Kenobi series, was originally designed as a trilogy of films! Years ago, there were rumors and there was talk of an Obi-Wan movie, but it was never officially announced and I don’t remember a trilogy of movies ever being mentioned in the rumors.
The scripts for the first film were written by Stuart Beatiand his scripts were taken by the writer of the series Job Harold which transformed what would be a two-hour film into the six-hour series that was released. Beattie had nothing to do with the series, but was credited as a writer on Episodes 1, 2, 3 and 6 because they pretty much used all of his ideas of him in those episodes.
You know, this series could have actually worked better as a two-hour movie because it would have been a lot tighter and would have given the creative team less opportunity to screw things up by lengthening the story. The series is actually the first part of the trilogy that Beattie was planning with Lucasfilm, had more stories to tell after Darth Vader and Obi-Wan fought in that series finale.
Beattie recently explained all this in an interview with The Direct saying:
“I wrote the movie that they based the show on. So, yeah. I spent about a year, a year and a half working on it. And then, when the decision was made to stop doing spin-off films after Solo is I left the project and I moved on to other things. Joby came and took my scripts and turned them from two hours to six. So, I didn’t work with them at all, I just got the credit for the episodes because it was all my stuff. “
Beattie went on to talk about presenting her trilogy idea to Lucasfilm and shares what each of the films would focus on:
“So when I presented my Obi-Wan story to Lucasfilm, I said, ‘There are actually three stories here. Because there are three different evolutions the character has to go through to go from Obi-Wan to Ben.’ And the first was the first movie, which was the show, which was, “Surrender to the will of the Force. Carry your will, surrender. Leave the boy alone. ”So, the second one [movie] he was thinking about where Kenobi ends up. And one of the most powerful and arguably most powerful moments in Obi-Wan’s entire story is the moment he sacrifices himself in A New Hope. Great time, you know, it makes you cry. But, if you stop and think about it, it’s kind of sudden, going to fight a guy, see Luke and say, “I’m going to die.” You know, this required foresight for me. This required pre-acceptance that this would happen. “
This guy is already better than what the series creative team ended up offering. The writer continued to discuss what he had envisioned for the second part of the story, which focused on Ewan McGregor ‘The character of the character who “reckoned with his own mortality” and the ultimate sacrifice that Kenobi would have to make:
“So, again, it’s one of those universal things that we all struggle with, to come to terms with our own mortality. So, that was the second step of evolution for me, which Obi-Wan now has to deal with. with his own mortality, somehow in a prophecy, or Qui-Gon telling him, “The time will come when you have to sacrifice yourself for good”, And then [Obi-Wan] it’s like, ‘What? No, no, no, no, I’m here to help you … I can’t, no. ‘ And bring it to the point where Obi Wan has accepted the idea that he will die, and that he will voluntarily die at a crucial moment, and you will know when that moment will present itself. So that’s when that time comes [A New Hope], Do you understand. She is acknowledging that she has already embarked on this journey, and she is waiting for this moment, and this is how she is able to do it so easily. To do it [sacrifice], and die. So that for me was the second evolution, the second movie, the second story. So for me, if I have anything to do with Obi Wan’s second season, this is the evolution of the character I would face him on. This, for me, is really interesting. And as I said, universal “.
None of this has ever come across in the series, and should have done so if they hadn’t planned on doing a second season! That aspect of Kenobi had to be established, and it wasn’t. Beattie later stated that both Lucasfilm and McGregor agreed with the idea. When asked about it he said:
“Oh absolutely. Yeah, sure. Yeah, Ewan was on board, everyone. We were like, ‘Yeah, ready to go.’ And we were so excited too … That’s a great story to tell, isn’t it? He’s such a fitting character and Ewan is just great at that. And he’s the perfect age, everything.
But then Lucasfilm and Disney changed their plans and Beattie was “devastated” when she discovered that the project would no longer be a film trilogy. He said:
“He was dying to be done. You know, unfortunately, it’s just that it was Solo who changed the direction of the system. I like Solo, personally, but he didn’t make a lot of money. It’s crazy in some ways to think of it as it is. [was directed by] of the best directors working today. But, just because it didn’t reach a certain number, they had to rethink. And, again, way above my pay level, but it definitely crushed us. Devastated, absolutely devastated. But that’s the business, you know, ups and downs. I’m glad it was done. I’m glad the show was made. I am proud of my story that [got] said. I’m glad my characters are going through it. And I’m glad I got the credit. I wish, I wish they had been able to make my films. “
What a shame. Solo it was a great movie, and it was quite successful. Was Ron Howardthe highest grossing film! But Lucasfilm and Disney got scared and didn’t want to take the risk with a Kenobi film trilogy. So … it became a lackluster Disney + series. What a shame.
Beate never wrote the other two films in the trilogy. The way him definitely looks the best way! I don’t understand why they didn’t go ahead with the trilogy of films and develop them exclusively for Disney +, if that’s where their head was. I don’t know, some studio executives make stupid decisions.
