Special: Jamie Lee Curtis and Bloomhouse work on Lizzie Johnson’s book Paradise: A City’s War to Survive the American Wildfires, as a feature film. They’ll also get stories about bus driver Kevin McKay and schoolteacher Mary Ludwig, who helped get a bus full of kids through a deadly fire.
Described as the Tour de Force, the book is the final account of the California Campfires, the nation’s deadliest wildfires of the century, and looks at what went wrong during the climate crisis and how to prevent future tragedies.
“As a lifelong Californian, I watched with deep sadness the brutality and devastation of the fires that devastated Paradise, California. When I listened to Lizzie Johnson on NPR and then read her amazing book, I knew I wanted to turn this story into a movie and explore the human elements, tragedies and courage that only the movie could do. “I’m glad my partners at Blumhouse agree,” Curtis said.
Jason Bloom and Curtis will produce the film through Blumhouse and Curtis’ Comet Pictures. Johnson is an executive producer.
“The path to healing for the people of heaven is still far away, and it is vital for me to know that the history of the city is in safe hands and will not be forgotten. I was immediately struck by Jamie’s compassion and enthusiasm for understanding heaven and its people. “With his passion at the helm, I know this story will be told in a heavenly way,” Johnson said.
