The legend of Jason Voorhees refuses to die and that’s exactly how horror fans like it. The hockey masked killer from Friday 13th the franchise is officially making a comeback with a brand new film, which happens to be the thirteenth installment of the iconic slasher franchise. But according to producer Robert Barsamian, this is just the beginning.
In a recent interview with SFX magazine, Barsamian revealed that Jason’s story is far from over:
“We are actively working on a new film – which will be the thirteenth in the series – as well as a new video game. Jason Voorhees will return in other unexpected ways.”
This will definitely make horror fans speculate wildly. Could this mean a new TV series, an animated project, or even a crossover event? Whatever it is, it seems Friday 13th is about to enter a completely new era.
On top of that, Horror, Inc. is giving Jason a terrifying new look. Marketing Director Sheri Connect told SFX that the character’s iconic mask has been redesigned for the next installment.
“Jason wore different looks in each of the 12 films, so we wanted to draw inspiration from some of the most iconic.
We reimagined the eyes on his mask to make Jason look even more menacing and paid homage to the franchise with the mask’s 13 holes.
The new design will be used at all levels, with some slight differences in interpretation to suit the specific context of each project.”
As for continuity and where this new film fits into the timeline, Barsamian kept things mysterious. “We are exploring a variety of opportunities, but constantly remaining focused on authenticity,” he said. This could mean anything from a direct sequel to a retelling or something completely different.
Sixteen years have passed since 2009 Friday 13th reboot starring Jared Padaleckiand some fans have been craving another blood-soaked trip to Camp Crystal Lake ever since.
Between the upcoming movie, the new video game and the Peacock prequel series Crystal Lakewhich will explore the origins of Jason and his mother Pamela, the franchise is finally rising from the grave in a big way.
