AS James Gunn’S Superman flies in cinemas this weekend and starts the new DCU, a different Superman The story is re -emerged.
According to the Wall Street Journal, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav Personally, a black Superman movie written by the acclaimed author set aside Ta-nehisi coates.
This is the film that was produced by JJ Abrams and set during the era of American civil rights. He was described by the professionals as “too awakened”, bringing to his silence dismissal in 2022. For fans who wondered what happened to the project once in progress, this report provides an answer.
Before Warner Bros. and Discovery Merger, the study was developing two separate Black Superman stories. One was the theatrical feature of Coates and Abrams, destined to be an alternative piece of universe.
The other was an HBO Max Limited series of Michael B. JordanOutlier company, centered on Val-Zod, an Earth-2 Superman variant. Writers Darnell Metayer AND Josh Peters They were introduced in 2021 to write the project led by Jordan, which also vanished from View Post-Merger.
While Zaslav may have hit the brakes, the project is not completely dead.
James Gunn, now Co-Ceva di Dc Studios, has left the door open. Previously he said that if the script of Coates is strong and the timing aligns, the film could “happen absolutely” as a story by Elseworlds “Like Joker”.
That Elseworlds label allows DC to explore autonomous stories outside the main cinematographic universe. So far, the only active title under that banner is The Batman – Part IIthat will not affect the screens until 1 October 2027.
It is not clear if DC will soon revisit Black Superman at any time, but the idea is no longer outside the table. And given the renewed attention on the script of Coates, it is possible that we could see it resurrected along the line, especially if the new DCU continues to thrive in a creative and financial way.
