When James Gunn It was deep in post-production SupermanEverything was going in place … except for an annoying problem … the audience loved what they saw, but they were not completely grabbing the world in which they were entering.
“We discovered that people loved the film but that they were confused for the world they were entering,” Gunn said to I9.
That confusion prompted Gunn to revisit one of his greatest inspirations, Star Wars. In particular, George LucasFamous opening crawl, which immediately dropped the spectators in a very galaxy, very distant with only a few lines of text.
Gunn realized that the same approach could help the spectators anchor in the DC universe he was building. He explained:
“I didn’t have it in the movie originally, [And it was] Definitely inspired by Star Wars. Think of Star Wars and it’s like “Yes, there is all these crazy things, but you have that parchment at the beginning” and it hasn’t really disturbed me as a child.
“I like the parchment. So it’s just a little tone for what this universe is so that people feel a little more established.”
So, the solution was to start Superman Off with six fast sentences that exhibit the foundations … The universe, the origin of Kal-El and the premise of the film. It worked big and I loved it!
Gunn also made an interesting connection to his past work, saying:
“It is almost like in the guardians [of the Galaxy] allowing that music to enter because everything was so extravagant. But hearing that the 70s are pop, he gave people a little ground.
“So I am always really aware of allowing great, brazen, strange and crazy things, but also giving people their feedback. And you do it through emotion. You do it through a subtle narrative. And you do it through music. That was the film.”
So while Gunn is Superman It could be wild, strange and vibrant in every best way, that short opening opening assures that we are not lost when we enter the world for the first time.
