If you played The last part of us IIProbably still brings the emotional scar of Joel’s brutal death at the hands of Abby. It is one of the most spoken moments in the games and, as you know, has made its way in the second season of HBO The last of us.

Showrunner Craig Mazin He recently spoke of the pressure to give life to that moment on the screen and the emotional gravity he brings. He said:

“I think what I was the most anxious to create on the screen and terrified to create on the screen was Joel’s death, and in particular, really, when I think about it, it was not so much the mechanics of Joel’s death – You don’t want to win back what someone has done, but what Ashley Johnson has done in the game is the heart that has torn himself.

“Something like that is so traumatic and binds you to this character in a way you were not tied before … you were tied up in a different way to that character before: you were linked to Ellie in the first season in the first game, like the person Joel loved after not being able to love for so long.

“Well, here we are kept in Ellie now in a very different way. And what Bella did there was rather shocking.”

The emotional weight Beautiful ramsey Door to Ellie aims to remodel the way we connect to the character on the screen. While some screen gaming adaptations soften their edges, The last of us He leaning on the intensity, knowing that this is a turning point not only for Ellie, but for the entire story that goes on.

In the game, Joel’s murder is in part for how little explanation gets the player. Abbies’s anger is heard, but not completely understood until later.

On the show, the rhythm moves. The adaptation inclrates in clarity, with Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) revealing his reasons as he puts on Joel. He tells him the 18 soldiers and the “disarmed doctor” who killed. That doctor was his father. And with the chilling calm, Joel knows exactly what is about to happen.

Joel’s death lands in episode 2 of The last of us Season 2, now streaming on HBO and is a punch, but it is also narrative fuel for everything to come.

So how did you feel that scene playing on the screen? Did you hit you in the same way as the game or otherwise?
