Director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street could speak, Mufasa: The Lion King) signed to direct the next biographical film Be my babyA biographical drama on the singer Ronnie Spector.
Zendaya (Euphoria, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dune), which has been attached to the project since 2020, will play the music icon of the 60s. Before the singer died in 2022, Spector was an executive producer in the film and chose Zendaya by hand to play it on the screen.
Be my baby It will be adapted by the 1990 memories book Be my baby: how I survived mascara, miniskirts and madness, or, my life as a fabulous ronetta that Spector wrote with Waldron wins.
However, the film should focus on the singer’s life with the troubled producer Phil Spector. Dave Kajganich (Bones and everything else, Suspiria) was chosen to write the original script.
Spector, born Veronica Bennett, became famous in the 60s as the leader of the female group The Ronettes, known for successes such as “Be My Baby”, “Baby I Love You” and “Walking in the rain”.
He married the music producer Phil Spector in 1968 (and took his name professionally) but detailed in his autobiography which essentially kept her as a virtual prisoner in their home during their tumultuous marriage.
During that period, he recalled that he had fallen into alcoholism, which had an impact on his professional life. Phil Spector was sentenced to 19 years in prison in 2009 for killing the actress Clarkson wool. He died at the age of 81 in 2021
Timing Be my baby It hasn’t been clear since Jenkins recently signed to direct The natural orderA science fiction thriller starring Glen Powell. Zendaya has Christopher Nolan’s epic The odysseyUniversal’s Shrek 5and Marvel’s Spider-Man 4 on the horizon. Zendaya will also appear in the next romantic comedy The drama with Robert Pattinson.
