Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez responded to recent reports that Sigourney WeaverEllen Ripley is being considered for the sequel, and digital de-aging technology would be used to bring the character back to life as we knew her decades ago.
Alvarez denied the rumors by simply responding to the news on social media, calling the report “Funny gossip. But that’s not true at all.”
So there you have it, folks! I honestly never expected to see Ripley return, and as I said before, I would be fine if they moved on without her. The Alien franchise is set in a huge universe and there are so many more stories to tell.
Then there are the logistics of making everything work from then on Alien: Romulus is set between Alien AND AliensRipley is canonically in stasis, adrift in space during this time. I’m not sure how they would solve the problem.
Either way, Alvarez’s film Romulus proves that you don’t need Ripley to make the Aline franchise work.
As for the next film, Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are working on the script of the film which should focus on the two survivors of last year’s film: By Cailee Spaeny Rain and David Jonsson’s Andy.
Alvarez previously said: “I think it’s going to be really exciting to work with the characters you know from this movie, in a place in Alien franchises we’ve never been to before and to discover things you’ve never seen before.
It will be a while before we see this sequel made, but I can’t wait to see whatever Alvarez and his creative team come up with.
Funny gossip. But that’s not true at all.
