According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider of The Insiderthis project was developed with Sony Pictures and Jim Henson Company. The original Labyrinth has become a beloved classic for its imaginative storytelling and David Bowie’s iconic performance as the Goblin King, Jareth.
The original film follows sixteen-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) as he navigates a magical, ever-changing labyrinth to save his little brother from Jareth’s clutches.
While Labyrinth wasn’t a major box office success when it was first released, it has gained a loyal fan base over the years. This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid and I loved the mix of puppetry and dark fantasy.
Eggers, known for his gothic and atmospheric films such as The witch, The LighthouseAND The Normanseems like an unconventional choice for a family-oriented fantasy remake. But his talent for creating visually stunning and deeply immersive worlds could bring a new, darker edge to the material.
If the project moves forward, it would mark Eggers’ first film aimed at a wider audience. Unless, of course, you decide to lean heavily The one about the labyrinth more disturbing nuances.
This isn’t the first time Hollywood has attempted to revisit the Labyrinth universe. In 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlmann was hired to write a sequel, with Fede Alvarez subsequently attached to Direct. That version never materialized.
