THE BOYS showrunner says season five will blow fans’ expectations

While the fans wait The boys to return for its fifth and final season, showrunner Eric Kripke is expressing his excitement for the series’ conclusion. It also promises some big changes in the show’s universe, and also acknowledges the pressure of finishing the show satisfactorily.

During an interview with EW, Kripke explained how knowing the endpoint liberated the creative team.

He said: “It’s truly a gift to know, as a director, when your story will end because you know when to blow the doors off and completely change the world of the show.

“You don’t have to keep it because you have six more seasons. You have to get yourself out of it now to get the end game going. So, that’s what the finale was built for.”

The season 4 finale of the series kicked off the finale, with Homelander (Anthony Starr) “successfully taking control of everything and essentially turning the country into a Homelander-led kingdom.”

He continues, “Instead of having a villain talk about something he’s going to do, which our heroes then stop from happening, it’s so funny that he actually did it. He took control of the country.

“It’s his country now. What will it look like in season 5 and how will our characters fight? Which led to a lot of fun in the writer’s room. I’m really excited about what we’re coming up with.

In another interview with Collider, Kripke revealed his apprehension about creating the perfect ending. “You can count on one hand the amount of really great series finales. It’s so hard to land that plane, much less we’re landing eight different planes.

“I’m appropriately respectful and have a fair amount of trepidation about how difficult that job is. I’m not going into this at all arrogant. I’m going into it like, ‘Okay, let’s second-guess every single decision because we really want to land this plane.'”

When talking about crafting the show’s conclusion, Kripke added. “Anything can really happen. We’re having fun and terrifying at the same time in the writers’ room. It’s so fun to have all the guardrails taken off.

“You are not obligated to maintain any plot or character beyond this season. Nothing and no one is safe, and that’s really freeing and fun.”

I’m excited to see how this series ends! While The boys is coming to an end, however, Kripke and his team will continue to play in the universe with all the spin-offs they have in mind, including Gen V AND Vought on the rise.
