We have an update on this Taika WaititI have no title Star Wars project, as Hollywood insider/scooper Daniel Richtman says the film has been shelved indefinitely.
I’m not surprised because Lucasfilm doesn’t have the best track record in completing the project Star Wars film project that they have put into development.
No title or story details have ever been revealed, but Waititi has spoken about the project several times, saying, “I’ve been developing [the Star Wars film] for a few years, but I think with any film, but that one in particular, it’s something I’d really like to do well, so I don’t want to rush things. It will bubble to the side.”
He added: “I want to capture the joy and entertainment of those early films like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and all those other ones, so I’m trying to figure it out. It’s going to happen.”
Even the director came out and said, “It’s going to be… a dramatic break… a Taika Waititi movie. It’s going to piss people off.”
Waititi explained that he’s trying to create something new with the franchise and expand the universe beyond all the characters and locations we’re familiar with.
He said he’s still trying to come up with an idea for the film and that he’s “still throwing everything at the wall.” He also explained that he hasn’t quite figured out his idea yet.
The director also spoke about what he plans to bring to the franchise, saying: “Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand.
“I don’t think I’m of any use in the Star Wars universe in making a movie where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the Millennium Falcon project, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’
“It’s all its own, it’s great, although I’d like to take something new and create new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like a very small story.”
There’s a chance this film could be taken off the shelf and put back into development, but at the moment it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere.
