Oscar nominee Paolo Mescalknown for roles in Normal people and movies The lost daughter AND All of us strangers and his most recent blockbuster Gladiator IIhas signed on to star in another high-profile Hollywood project.
Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (American beauty, Revolutionary road, 1917) is working on his much-talked-about four-part biopic series on The Beatles for Sony Pictures, and Mescal is unofficially on board to play Paul McCartney.
The casting – which was first rumored in the summer – was proposed by Mescal Gladiator 2 director Ridley Scott in a conversation with Christopher Nolan Tuesday at the Director’s Guild of America, where he said, “Paul is actually stacked, he’s going to be The Beatles next.”
Sources close to the production then confirmed to Variety that Scott did not speak out of turn and that Mescal, even if she has not yet officially signed on, is actually attached to the project.
Mescal is now expected to play Paul McCartney in four biopics that Mendes is developing and will direct about the Fab Four, each focusing on a different member of the band and released theatrically.
The project was first revealed in February, but casting speculation erupted several months later. Alongside Mescal as McCartney, Harris Dickinson it was said that he played John Lennon, Barry Keoghan was supposed to play Ringo Starr, and Charlie Rowe he would play George Harrison.
Two weeks ago, Starr himself seemed to confirm that Keoghan was playing him, claiming that he thought the Irish actor was “somewhere taking drum lessons, and hopefully not too many.”
Mescal’s casting, at least according to Scott, may mean the two won’t team up together as expected. Last month Mescal was announced as the star of Scott’s new project, the thriller The dog starsbut the director suggested in his speech to the DGA on Tuesday that the scheduling could conflict The Beatles project. “So maybe I’ll have to let it go,” he said.
Mescal has a couple of upcoming films already shot and set to be released in 2025, including The history of sound next to Josh O’ConnorAND Hamnet with Jessie Buckley.
