Mark strong (Kingsman, Green Lantern) is confirmed to play Carmine Falcone in the upcoming DC series The penguinand we have the first official look at the actor in the role.
Strong will play a younger version of Falcone in the series. The character has been played by John Turturro In The Batman and it is his death that creates the power vacuum that Oz Cobb is trying to fill in the series.
It is safe to assume that the scenes involving Strong will be flashback scenes. Strong is a great actor and many fans were hoping for him to play Hugo Strange, but obviously they are using him in a very different way.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, executive producer Matt Reeves talked about why The penguin is set just a week after the flood that devastated Gotham City at the end of The Batman.
He said: “The basic idea is that this story is about that moment after the movie. There’s an opportunity where Carmine Falcone has had a stranglehold on power for the last 20 years in this place, and now he’s dead.
“And so someone like Oz, who really believes he can achieve more, but no one else believes this is his moment to strike.”
“And we kind of touched on that at the end of The Batman as he’s staring out at the city. And we really wanted to pick up on that moment.”
Reeves added: “The other parameters we gave Lauren were that obviously we knew we wanted Oz to be in the next movie and we knew the events of that movie.
“And so we just said we need him to have this rise to power to the point where we’re going to take him, and then there have to be these events that kind of give you the sense that he’s going to enter the movie in this way.”
Colin Farrell resumes his role as the Penguin and moves to take control of the city’s criminal organization.
The eight-episode Penguin series has been described as a “Scarred-like” which will see the villain’s rise in the criminal underworld of Gotham City. It has also been confirmed that the series will lead directly into the events of Batman: Part Two.
The series also features the participation of Christin Miliotiwho plays the female lead Sofia Falcone, and Happy Rhenzywho plays a teenager who Penguin befriends and becomes his driver. The rest of the cast includes Michael Kelly (House of Cards, Jack Ryan), Shohreh Aghdashloo’s Diary (The Expanse, House of Sand and Fog) AND Deirdre O’Connell (External range) have joined the DC series.
Lauren LeFranc will be the writer and showrunner of the series and, speaking about it, he said: “I have long been a fan of the world of The Batmanand Matt’s film is a powerful and bold entry into the canon.
