Marvel Studios has released a new poster promoting its upcoming release Echo series and does something I don’t remember ever seeing it do before. It’s an ASL poster where the title is written in sign language, and I love it!
First introduced in the comics in 1999, Echo is a deaf Native American superhero who possesses exceptional photographic reflexes, allowing her to mimic any physical ability or movement she witnesses. What sets Echo apart is her deep connection to Native American culture and heritage, which plays a significant role in her character development. She is the adopted daughter of Kingpin, an infamous Marvel villain, which adds some interesting complexity to her plot.
Echo’s deafness makes her a groundbreaking character in representing disability diversity in the Marvel Universe. Her ability to bridge different worlds, both in terms of abilities and heritage, makes Echo a unique and fantastic addition to the MCU.
The series centers on Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as he “struggles to reconnect with his Native American roots while balancing aspirations of a life of crime as the successor to Wilson Fisk’s brutal legacy (Vincenzo D’Onofrio) aka Kingpin. In the first episode we are introduced to Maya Lopez and her struggles.”
Echo is developed by Ethan Cohen AND Emily Cohen, who are writers and executive producers of the show. The series is also the protagonist Charlie CoxZahn McClarnon, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Cody Lightning, Devery JacobsAND Graham Greene.
All five episodes will release on Disney+ and Hulu on April 9, 2024.
