Direction Michael Mann (Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, Ferrari) recently talked about superhero movies on The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast. During the conversation, she revealed that while she loved watching the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, he doesn’t see himself as the kind of director who would direct a superhero movie. He shared;
“I only make films that I’m passionate about and that put me a little more on the frontier. That’s where I do my best work. I’d like to be a journeyman director, going from film to film to film, but I don’t know, I don’t think I’d be very good at that, it doesn’t make my blood flow, on the other hand I think that Guardians of the Galaxy, for example, not necessarily this last one, but the previous two, really worked and I like watching them. And the reason why they work is because they have a really, really well-done narrative structure behind them. So it’s exciting in the sense of being able to expand into myth in that way and create myth. I think it’s a very exciting medium. Let’s not say something that I want do. I want to do a science fiction project, but it’s not about superheroes.”
Micheal Mann has done some incredible film work throughout his career and I still wouldn’t want to see him waste his talents making a superhero movie.
During a previous interview, Mann talked about a couple of other projects he’d like to do one day, including the sci-fi one he mentioned. The first project is a film set in Vietnam, which is most likely the adaptation of Mark Bowden’s Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam, which he was trying to make.
The director also talked about the science fiction film he would like to make, but when asked about it he replied: “I can’t talk about it!”
I hope Mann eventually gets to make these movies! I’d especially like to see it play in the sandbox of the sci-fi genre.
