This summer, theaters had a double release of films Barbie AND Oppenheimerwhich some called “Barbenheimer,” and it was the first time since the pandemic that we had seen two blockbusters go head-to-head on the same opening weekend. Barbie won the box office, but both films had big theatrical openings and great showings in theaters. Prior to the films’ release date, some executives were nervous about the idea of two major films colliding again, as they didn’t want their film to lose out on any ticket sales, and although it didn’t appear to have a negative impact, one producer in particular did its best to move Barbie to a different opening date.
In a recent edition of Variety’s Actors on Actors, Oscar nominee and star of Barbie, Margot Robbie said Oppenheimer star Cilian Murphy that producer Carlo Rovenwhich Robbie had already worked on in the 2021 film The suicide squadhad asked her to move the release of Barbie:
“One of your producers, Chuck Roven, called me, because we worked together on some other projects. And he said to me, “I think you guys should move the date.” And I was like, “We’re not going to move our date.” If you’re afraid of clashing with us, then move the date.’ And he says, ‘We’re not going to move our date.’ I just think it would be better for you to move.’ And I thought, ‘We’re not moving!’”
Barbie it grossed $1.4 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023. Oppenheimer was good in itself, but Robbie was right to bet on his film.
