Nicolas Cage he spoke a few times in response to his cameo The flashin which he finally got to play his version of Superman from the unmade film Superman liveswhich was in development in 1998. Kevin Smith wrote the script for the story and Tim Burton was hired as director, but the film never made it to the big screen, so it was nice to finally see Cage in the role.
The actor previously told USA Today shortly after the film’s release that while the scene was a “blink and you know it” situation, he also said, “For me, it was the feeling of fulfill me. Even the look of that particular character, finally seeing it on the screen, was satisfying. But like I said, it’s fast.” But now that we’re further away, Cage has more to say about representation.
In an interview with Wired, Cage said:
“You said it perfectly when you said, ‘We made a deal.’ That’s the crux of it. There’s an agreement, a mutual understanding and a contract that you came into knowing both sides and knowing full well what we’re getting into I’m not saying they used AI on Superman. Maybe they did. I don’t know. Maybe it was just CGI, but whatever it was, that’s not what I did on set. As much as I like it [director] Andy [Muschietti] AND [sister and film producer] Barbara [Muschietti]—and I think they’re great—that’s still not what I was told to do on set.”
It’s a real shame that Cage didn’t feel like he had all the information needed for the scene. It was fun for the audience to see, but if he was fooled, that’s a shame. I can imagine how frustrating it must be.
