Barbie Writer-director Greta Gerwig and star producer Margot Robbie showcased their comedic talents in a one-two punch tonight, thanking the Gotham Awards for the Global Icon & Creator Award. Watch her speech above.
“We love a restaurant in a bank!” said Gerwig of Cipriani’s Wall Street office, and that’s exactly what it is.
The duo was lovingly introduced by Laura Dern.
“In a way, I’m surprised every time you text me,” Gerwig told Dern. “And I’d be surprised if you wrote me back,” she added, turning to Robbie.
The two recount the making of the blockbuster that has turned the world pink and earned more than $1.4 billion worldwide since its premiere this summer. They stood close together and alternated in rows.

“Four years ago I asked Greta to come and write for me Barbie with me,” Robbie said. Gerwig and her husband and co-writer Noah Baumbach “took an object—a puppet with no character or story—and came up with the most ridiculous, hideous banana script to recapture what they loved about the movies.”
Gerwig said of making the film during the Covid lockdown: “We thought if no one was going to make films anyway, then they might as well not make them.” And we showed it to everyone. And Warner Bros. miraculously said yes, and Mattel miraculously said yes.”

Robbie: “Basically. Primarily. With a few notes that Greta and Noah ignored.’
Gerwig: “We checked the notes carefully. And then we made our case.”
Robbie: “You ignored her.”

The two then began a months-long campaign to get Ryan Gosling to play Ken. “And also make him our friend who texts with us,” Gerwig said.
