Director Taika Waititi revealed in a recent interview that he had no interest in signing with Marvel Studios to make a Thor movie. The director ended up making two films for them, including Thor: Ragnarok AND Thor: Love and Thunder. She explained that the reason she initially took the job was for the money as she had just had her second child. She shared on the SmartLess podcast:
“You know what? I had no interest in making one of those movies. It wasn’t in my plans for my career as an author. But I was poor and I had just had a second child, and I thought, ‘You know what, this would be a great opportunity to feed these children.”
“And ‘Thor,’ let’s face it, was probably the least popular franchise. I never read Thor comics as a kid. That was the comic I would pick up and go, “Ugh.” And then I did some research about it, and I read a Thor comic or 18 pages, or whatever the length of them is. I was still baffled by this character.
Waititi was then asked if Marvel executives were afraid to bring him on board, and he responded, saying, “I think there was no room for them to do it anymore. I thought, “Well, they called me, this is really the bottom of the barrel.”
It’s an interesting attitude he has towards an opportunity like this. It seems like it was all done reluctantly. This guy was a professional director who used to work constantly and make great films Thor. I imagine your definition of poor is different than others.
These comments kind of hit me because I was laid off from my job the week after I had my second child. I couldn’t find work for a long time after that. I experienced what it was like to be truly poor and constantly worried about feeding my family and paying the bills. It must be hard to see Marvel knock on your door and offer you a job to make a comic book movie.
However, Waititi has confirmed that he will not return to directing Thor5. He explained: “I know I won’t be involved… I’ll focus on these other movies that I’ve signed up for… So it’s been six, seven years. I imagine another ‘Thor’ would be much sooner… But I love the Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris. I would never feel like they’re cheating on me. We have an open relationship, and it’s like they want to see other people, I’m happy about that. I would still go back to bed with them someday.”
What do you think of the recent comments Waititi made here?
