He seems like a fan favorite director James Gunn he has a competitive streak in him. The recently released book MCU: The Kingdom of Marvel Studios includes an engaging behind-the-scenes story Guardians of the Galaxy and how Gunn didn’t want to share writing credits with the film’s co-writer, Nicole Perlmann. In fact, she apparently actively tried to keep his name out of the film’s credits so she could have sole credit.
Perlman, however, fought on his own merit, and when he won, he threw a “f*ck James Gunn” party! The book alleges that Gunn used bullying tactics to try to keep Perlman’s name out of the credits. Perlman actually wrote the film’s original story, and many of his original ideas made it into the final version of the film, including Star-Lord’s backstory. Thor screenwriter Zack Stentz revealed:
“Nicole had to fight like hell for her credits on Guardians of the Galaxy. But now she’s probably the most important female action writer because she was the first woman to have her name on not just a Marvel movie, but on a Marvel movies that people really love.
He then talked about the party and shared what he’s still angry about about the situation and what Gunn was doing to keep his name out of the credits:
“He threw a party when the movie came out literally called the ‘F*ck James Gunn’ party because he won that very painful credit arbitration. The thing I’m still angry about, and I say this as a fan of James Gunn as a director, was that he was clearly selectively leaking things to his friends and fanboy media circles to undermine his credit. When Matthew Vaughn decided to throw a tantrum over the fact that we got credit on screen [on X-Men: First Class]at least he did it under his own name.”
The book also included a quote from Perlman, saying that she “credits everyone in the film, including James, for making it so good.”
I’m sure Gunn will respond to this story eventually, and since he says he never lies to his fans about certain things, he’ll tell us the truth! This just goes to show that Hollywood is a cutthroat place to be a part of. Even people who seem kind and respectful sometimes play dirty.
