As the SAG-AFTRA strike progresses, one critical issue the actors are negotiating over is that of generative artificial intelligence technology and how actors’ likenesses and voices may be used in the future. The key to the debate is consent and compensation, but it’s amazing how in such a short period of time technology has advanced enough to go from being a completely new idea to making stealing someone’s face and voice a big deal. problem.
We just reported that actor Stephen Fry was shocked to hear that his voice was taken from the Harry Potter audiobooks and used to narrate a documentary he was unaware of.
Now another story has emerged, this time from the Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks, who posted on Instagram warning fellow actors that a profoundly false version of himself was being used to promote a dental plan, and he had nothing to do with it. Check it out below:

It’s weird, because you can definitely tell they were looking for Hanks, but he only looks like him from the nose up. The actor didn’t give any credit to the company, because I’m sure he doesn’t really want to promote them, and he’s definitely taking legal action, but man, it sure seems like the wild west out there with respect to this type of crime. Hopefully, the strike will lead to some sort of dialogue about this issue and begin ongoing solutions. There is certainly no one answer that will solve the entire problem at this point, but laws will need to be created and adapted as time goes on and crimes will change in the future.
