After the success of Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Jonathan Frakes believes it’s possible Paramount will greenlight the proposed spin-off series Star Trek: The Legacy. The project was launched by Picard showrunner Terry Matalesand was conceived as a continuation of The next generation and set after the events of Picard.
If the show were to move forward, Frakes has a pretty solid idea of what William Riker’s role would be in the series. He recently shared his ideas for continuing Riker’s story during an interview with Star Trek Explorer #8 (via: StarTrek.com). He sees Riker taking on a similar role to Charlie in the Charlie’s Angels series. He explained:
“The Rikers’ marriage is back on track. In my mind, for the show to move forward, Riker would have to be a captain and have his own ship, or he would be promoted to admiral and act as a liaison. I’m only half joking when I say it would be great for me if the show continued and I was like Charlie from Charlie’s Angels. They’re supposed to come to my office one day a week for a meeting with Riker. It would be perfect. Then I could direct a bunch of episodes and be on the show. I suspect if it went ahead, it would Jeri Ryan, Michelle HurdAND Ed Speleerswho is now in Starfleet, and Not Burton AND Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, who played Geordi’s daughter. I imagine too Lulu Wilson, who played the Rikers’ daughter in Season 1 and was so fabulous, could be a part of it. She could come back and maybe be in Starfleet.”
He continued saying:
“It seems to me that there’s a real opportunity for three of the children of the legacy characters to go forward and become in some sense the next Star Trek: The Next Generation. It just feels like it’s ready to go. It’s the blueprint for the next phase.” .”
This seems like a great way to handle the character moving forward. We’ll just have to wait and see if Paramount has actually decided to move forward. They should! Star Trek: The Legacy It would be an amazing series! Speaking about it previously, Frakes said:
“I think they can’t deny not only the fan reaction, but also the fact that the numbers put the show in the Top 10 of the streaming charts. And that season of Star Trek: Picard was easily among the best seasons of any Star Trek – I think we can all agree on that. I mean, Star Trek fans are loyal. It’s not millions and millions of people, and it’s not the youngest fandom in the world…”
Frakes went on to say he has no doubts about this Star Trek: The Legacy will be realized one day, saying:
“I’m an eternal optimist and I believe in a perfect world, they’ll find the resources and the energy and they’ll hire Terry to put this Legacy show together and it will, in fact, come to fruition.”
Let’s hope it does! In the meantime, what do you think of the direction Frakes would like to see his character Riker go?
