HARRY POTTER Actress Bonnie Wright Says She Didn’t Get Screen Time As Ginny Weasley Left Her Frustrated And Anxious

THE Harry Potter the movies are great fun for both book fans and those who have only read the movies, but one thing book fans can all agree on is that the movies left a lot out! The books (especially from #4 onwards) are very rich in characters and stories, and the movies only manage to capture the main points. Some of the storylines, conversations, background happenings, and character development just went through the editing room to make the lengths of these films palatable for viewers.

One character who apparently succeeded developmentally was Ginny Weasley. Bonnie Wrightwho played the Weasleys’ lonely sister in the movies, recently met up with him Michael Rosenbaum’S Inside you podcast, where he expressed disappointment that Ginny wasn’t more prominent in films, saying:

“I definitely feel there was anxiety about performing and doing the best thing as my character was being built. Like, Oh God, am I going to do this character justice that people love? So it’s always been hard to do, especially when, inevitably, a lot of each character’s scenes were cut from the book to the film. So you didn’t have much to show in the film. It was a little disappointing at times, because there were parts of the character that just didn’t come through because there weren’t the scenes to do that. That made me feel a little anxious or just frustrated I guess.”

Wright was given a line in the first film, 2001 Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Wright initially had no lines.

“The first line of the film, which was only one line, was given to me that day, [and director Chris Columbus] he was like, ‘I think you need a line’, which is my ‘good luck’ to Harry. I actually read Hermione’s lines because they didn’t have any more scenes to read, so they said, ‘You’re going to have to read this character.’”

There were no conversations with the producers about Ginny being more involved. This was because “there wasn’t room for much change in those scripts”. Wright said:

“There were a million executives going through them all. I think what maybe I took in, which I no longer care about now, is that I felt like maybe my anxiety was about, Oh, I’m going to be seen as playing this character wrong, rather than realizing it later that it wasn’t me. really given the opportunity to do so. So it wasn’t really my fault, exactly.

Fans join Wright in feeling more Ginny was needed.

“When fans share that disappointment… it’s like, ‘We know it wasn’t you. We just wanted more from you.’ And that’s the same for every character. If only they could be five-hour movies.”

I guess this is the problem MAX’s new Harry Potter series will be trying to address. Though I wished the characters from the original film could have afforded the luxury of playing them in more depth because the casting in those films was so perfect. But I trust that the creators of the series will also offer us something just as magical. Are you looking forward to the new show based on the books?
