There have been a couple of updates on the Star Wars Landau series in recent months from Donald Glove AND Kathleen Kennedy. About a year ago Kennedy said the series was still in development, and a few months ago Glover said he would love to “play Lando again” and that playing the character had been a fun experience for him. But he also explained that it has to be the right project for him to come back to.
Now, series writer Justin Simien (Haunted house) recently said that after working on developing the series, he hasn’t heard from Lucasfilm in the past three years. He said in an interview with The Direct:
“I’ve definitely opened my heart and spent a lot of time working with them to put together a really great show. Everyone seems to love it and, you know, I was told we had to put it on hold because of scheduling, and next update i got [was in 2020], some years ago. So I don’t know, I have no idea what’s going on.”
Well, that’s not a good sign! There doesn’t seem to be much movement in the project. It definitely doesn’t look like it’s still in development like Kennedy said. Glover previously shared his thoughts on the project saying, “It just has to be the right way to do it. Now, time is precious. I think everyone, in the last couple of years with this pandemic shit, has really had people experience time in a way where they’re like, ‘Well, why is it me? [doing this] … I should be around oranges.’ [Glover did the interview in an orchard]”
He added that he doesn’t want to waste his time on a project he’s not fully invested in, but said Lando is definitely a character he’d love to play again: “People realized their time was precious. You only get so much. So I’m not interested in doing something that’s just a waste of time or just a paycheck. I would much rather spend time with people I like. So it just has to be the right thing, which I think it could be. Lando is definitely someone I would love to date.
Glover has previously shared his vision for a Lando project, describing it as Fraser in space: it would be nice to see, like, Fraser in the space. Like, a high-level guy in space. All of these characters are very specific and have very specific points of view, so it’s always going to be fun to see them travel to a planet that’s the opposite of what they’re used to… it would be fun to write, for sure.
Maybe one day this Lando project will happen, but right now with the writer’s and actor’s strike, it’s definitely not going to happen anytime soon.
