Tom Cruise had sleepless nights fueled by anxiety for the perfect ending of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McCarrie pulled off something awesome with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning part one while crafting a perfect action thriller. I loved the movie and was completely happy and satisfied with how the movie turned out. Although this is the first part of a two part film, they managed to finish the film without making it feel like a cliffhanger.

Getting that satisfying ending is something that gave Cruise anxiety and sleepless nights. She wanted to make sure the audience didn’t feel left hanging, like Sony Pictures Animated did Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse. My kids were pissed about that ending!

During an interview with the writer and director of Total Film Christopher McCarrie explained:

“Where we ended up with the film was always where we ended it. How we ended the film was a big, big mystery to us. He kept Tom up at night throughout the production. He always came and said, “This can’t be a twist, it has to be satisfying.” The audience must feel a sense of completeness.

“Tom kept watching that scene, and he had all this anxiety about whether it was going to be a satisfying conclusion or whether it would feel open. We have constantly revisited it, constantly perfected it.

I think they managed to make a very satisfying ending. Yes, she made us want more, but she also offered that sense of completion. The final a The showdown – Part one is a much more conclusive ending than Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Versewhich is a hardcore cliffhanger.

This is also just another example of how much Cruise cares about the movies he makes and wants to make audiences and fans happy when they come out of his movies. McQuarrie went on to say:

“If you leave it on a cliffhanger, it kind of feels like we’re expecting you to come back. We didn’t want that feeling. The feeling we’ve been looking for – and hope you get – is that we dare you not to return. We want to leave you thinking, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to see what happens next.’”

That’s exactly how I felt after watching the movie! So they won and the fans won. Everyone wins! Except for the villain of the story.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is now in theaters and the second part will be released on June 28, 2024.
