I’ve always had my own ideas of what to Haunted house movie could be. While the film released by the director Justin Simien it sounds like it’s going to be fun and honor the disney attraction it’s based on, i still think there’s a much more interesting way to tell the creepy stories in the mansion and how it could span multiple movies.
If this cinematic film ends up finding financial success at the box office, I have no doubt that Disney will want to expand the franchise and make more movies. In a recent interview with SFX magazine, Simien says the door has been left open for a sequel and there is potential for future films:
“It’s definitely in the realm of possibility. I kind of let myself go into world-building, so we definitely created a lot of stuff that I think a lot of other stories could come from and continue on from. It’s not up to me, but I definitely think there there are possibilities there.”
There are so many stories to tell in the Haunted Mansion universe, and it seems like some of them are covered in this film. Remember that there are 999 haunted house haunts. Obviously, some of these stories will garner more attention than others, but they could also set up stories for future movies.
When talking about exploring some of those stories and characters, the director said he got to “lean into the source material, but take it to a new place. what brings these ghosts to this particular place – why this place versus other places. ‘Could things like that happen?’, we get into it a lot.” He went on to say:
“It was just about expanding a little bit more what we know and what we can see around the story, but not filling in every blank. Of course Hatbox Ghost, that was important. We are building on what has been established, what it’s really been said, and I’ve tried to flesh it out and that story as well. I think it’s really satisfying. But it also leaves the door open for so much more.”
The film is about a mother and her son “who enlist a diverse group of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.” It has a great cast which includes LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Rosario DawsonAND Danny DeVito star, with Jamie Lee Curtis as Mrs. Leota, Winona Ryder, Dan LeviAND Hassan Minhaj will also appear in the new film.
In this horror adventure, “a female doctor and her 9-year-old son (Go after Dillon), looking to start a new life, move into an eerily cheap mansion in New Orleans, only to find the place is much more than they bargained for. Desperate for help, they contact a priest, who, in turn, enlists the help of a widowed scientist turned failed paranormal expert, a French Quarter psychic, and a cantankerous historian.
Haunted house will be released on July 28.
