Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse features hundreds of Spider-Man and according to one of the directors, Justin Thompson, there were over 280 variations of Spider-Man included in the film. Of course, some of them were more prominent than others, but not all of them came from the comics.
According to the co-writer and producer Chris Miller, there were about 100 original variants of Spider-Man created for the film. This little piece of news has been included in a new book that has been released, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: The Art of the Movie Of Ramin Zahed. Miller explained how inspiring it was to have all these different variations of Spider-Man in the film by saying:
“All kinds of people were truly inspired to see themselves as Spider-Person. We got to see drawings of Spider-People of all backgrounds, shapes, abilities and interests. This was very inspiring for us to see, and it became a guide light for us to create the menagerie that we might find at the Spider Society headquarters. Of course, we also mined all the comics for the big, weird spiders that exist in that world, but thinking through that all-encompassing lens from the point of view of the public was also very important to us”.
There weren’t enough Spider-Man characters in the comics to fill the film, so the creative team had to start coming up with them. Artist Chris Anka he went on to explain:
“This was our chance to suggest that the Spider-Verse is much bigger and has more possibilities than we’ve seen in the comics. It was a really cool opportunity for our character designers to really explore the different realms philosophically. While i was able to add over forty pre-existing characters in the film, there is always a need for more, so i ended up creating nearly a hundred more completely original spiders. These are supposed to be spiders from all over the multiverse, which allowed me to experiment wildly both with the costumes and the rendering style”.
I imagine we’ll see even more Spider-Man characters as the multiverse continues to be explored in the next film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
