I would really like to be excited about the upcoming film Wonkawhich tells the story of the origin of Willy Wonka from Roald Dal’S Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book. I’ve seen the filming of the movie, though, and nothing I’ve seen has piqued my interest.
Timothee Chalamet he plays Willy Wonka in the film, and I’m still not convinced of him in the role. The new film will focus on a young Willy Wonka and his adventures before opening the most famous chocolate factory in the world and will be a musical.
Entertainment reporter Emily Zemler recently frequented a launch event for the Wonka film trailer, as director Paul King frequented. While there he explained that he wanted to make a film that would “companion” to Roald Dahl’s book, and has also been described as a “companion” to the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Thing is, Chalamet doesn’t really capture that crazy energy that Gene Wilder had. I mean, who really can, though!?
In a previous interview, the actor explained why he wanted to play the character, and it was simply because he wanted to make a film for a younger, more optimistic audience. He said:
“Working on something that’s going to have a young, non-cynical audience has just been a great joy. That’s why I was drawn to it. In a time and climate of intense political rhetoric, when there is always so much bad news, hopefully this is a piece of chocolate.”
Previously discussing his version of Wonka, the actor said, “This is a Willy full of joy and hope and desire to become the greatest chocolatier.”
Neil Hannon of the band The Divine Comedy is writing original songs for the prequel, and King also co-wrote the script with Paddington 2 co-author Simone Farnaby.
The film is also the protagonist Matthew Bayton (Ghosts), Olivia Colmann (The Favourite), Tom Davis (Paddington 2), Simone Farnaby (THE Paddington movie), Sally Hawkins (The shape of water), Rich Fulcher (Marriage history), Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Paddington 2), Paterson Joseph (Zeros + Crosses), Keegan-Michael Key (Schmigadoon!), Cala Lane (The day will come), Matthew Luke (Paddington), Colin O’Brien (The mothership), Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus), Rakhee Thakrar (Sex education), Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Jim Carter (Downton Abbey), AND Eli White (The other one).
The film is released in theaters on December 15th. Stay tuned for the first trailer.
