Before James Mangold signed to write and direct a film set in the ancient times of the Star Wars universe, was in charge of directing a Boba Fett film. This was years ago and after it was reported, both Mangold and Kathleen Kennedy denied the existence of the project, but we all knew better.

Now Mangold admits he “more than flirted” with making a Boba Fett film for Lucasfilm and said the film would be “a one-of-a-kind spaghetti western in the Sergio Leone vein.” That concept was then taken up and reworked The Mandalorian AND Boba Fett’s book.

While I enjoyed myself to death The MandalorianI can’t help but be curious to see what Mangold would have done with a Boba Fett film. I’m sure it would have been much better than what we got with The Book of Boba Fett, though.

It was while Mangold was directing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which Kennedy asked if he was still interested in playing in the Star Wars sandbox. Speaking about that, he said, “I said, ‘Yeah, but it looks like everything you’re developing is going forward.'” So he proceeded to throw “a Ten Commandments on the dawn of the Force. It’s basically, for the fans, a kind of religion. What does it mean to have found this power and not even understand what it is?

Kennedy loved the idea, so they hired Mangold to develop it! Kennedy added, “Jim’s pretty quick—he already has the basic treatment laid out in his head.” Once the writer’s strike ends, Mangold “has every intention of wanting to push this very aggressively, and we want to support that.”

Mangold has previously shared some additional information on the type of Star Wars movie he’s making, and said, “It occurred to me that if I was doing one, it felt like most of what they were thinking about doing with movies was in the Star Wars present or in the future, and what attracted me the most was the distant past and how this galaxy was formed and how, more specifically, the Force was discovered.”

I know we still have a long way to go before we see this movie released, but I am very excited about the story! I love the concept and I love that it will explore ancient Star Wars history that has never been explored before.
