Henry Cavill he would have made a fantastic James Bond and, as many of you already know, he actually auditioned for the role of director Martin Campbell’S Casino Royale. Daniel Craig he eventually got the role, but if Craig hadn’t existed, the role would have gone to Cavill.
Campbell recently spoke about Henry Cavill’s 2005 James Bond audition during an interview with The Daily Express. Campbell had nothing but praise for Cavill’s audition, calling it “amazing,” but at the time, the director felt he was too young at 23 to step into the role of the iconic secret agent. Campbell said:
“He looked fantastic in the audition. His acting was outstanding. And look, if Daniel hadn’t existed, Henry would have been an excellent Bond. He looked fantastic, he was in great physical shape… very handsome, very chiseled. He just looked a bit young at the time then.”
Campbell went on to talk about the “democratic” process behind deciding who will play the next James Bond saying:
“You sit around a table, eight or nine people. It was me and the producers, the casting director etc. unanimous in their decision”.
With Craig’s exit from the franchise, this is a process that will have to repeat itself very soon. Does Cavill have a chance to do it now? Probably not because Campbell thinks he’s too old.
“Henry’s 40, so by the time he’s finished the third he’ll be 50 and anything beyond that will be two, three years for Bond. He’s in good shape Henry, he’s a good guy. He did very well at the audition, but ironically he was too young.
Cavill previously spoke about his audition while a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, saying:
“They told me it ultimately came down to, and this is what I was told, it just came down to me and Daniel, and I was the younger option. I think it was a fantastic choice to go with Daniel. I think Daniel has done an incredible job compared to past films.”
Craig did a great job in the role, and while it’s a little disappointing that Cavill will never play Bond, he’s set to play a Bond-like character in Guy Ritchie. argyle.
Argyle follows a super spy played by Cavill whose work takes him across the United States, London and other exotic locales. Vaughan previously said of the film, “When I read this first draft of the manuscript, I felt it was the most amazing and original spy franchise since Ian Fleming’s 1950s books.”
