Many Batman: The Animated Series fans are excited about the next project Batman: Caped Crusader. This animated series has been in development for some time with JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves, Bruce Timand comic book writer Ed Brubaker leading the charge.
It’s been a few months since we’ve had any sort of update on the series. The latest we reported was that the series landed a two-season order on Amazon after HBO made the stupid decision to cancel it.
During a recent appearance at the Annecy Animation Festival, producer Peter Gieraldi teased that the Caped Crusader will be more than the “full vision” Timm had for the fan-favorite film. Batman: The Animated SeriesHe explained.
“It’s everything Bruce Timm wanted to do in the original series, but because it was broadcast on a children’s channel, he wasn’t able to do it. So that definitely skews the old man. It’s more than his full vision.”
This is why fans are really excited about this series. Timm has previously opened up about the show sharing that it’s “more Batman: The Animated Series Of Batman: The Animated Series.”
The show will capture what Timm was originally trying to do with the original animated series, saying, “It kind of goes back to the original principles of the show that we originally came up with in the early ’90s. There were some limitations on what we could do in terms of adult content; in terms of violence and adult themes”. He went on to say, “My idea is basically to say, ‘OK, it’s 1990 again, I can do what I want to do this time, and I’ve got JJ and Matt backing me up.”
Abrams said so Batman: Caped Crusader“It really is an incredibly complex psychological story about someone who, in a way, needs to be redeemed — and that’s at least the subject of this first season.”
The series was written by acclaimed comic book writer Ed Brubaker who said, “Their take on the show, with a slightly meatier take on the character, and a new way of looking at the world of Gotham, set in the past but seen through a modern lens has really sold me, and so far every part of it has been amazing to work with. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what we’ve built up over the past few months in the writers room. it’s what some expect…but in a good way.”
Reeves explained that the show would focus on a version of Batman who is completely alone on his journey, saying, “There’s no Justice League. There’s no such thing. There’s no other superheroes. It’s Batman. You’re looking at this lone figure who swims in Gotham’s cesspool. He’s Batman, alone.”
It’s also been explained that Batman won’t get all of his gadgets since the show takes place before he starts investing money in that stuff. “Then it’s going to be very low-tech, initially. You know, as he develops as a character, we’ll start introducing those gadgets and the audience will be able to see how he’s developed the Batmobile using different prototypes. Part of the fun of this series is that we’re finding as he discovers these things that, [in] most of the other Batman series, they were already there.”
I can’t wait to actually see some footage from this series, and while the series will be darker than Batman: The Animated SeriesI hope the narrative is just as strong.
