Mark Hamill offers instruction on how to make his Joker laugh

Mark HammillThe version of The Joker, which was presented to us in Batman: The Animated Series, is a DC fan favorite. He set the bar high for any actor who would play The Clown Prince of Crime after him. One of the defining elements that Hamill brought to the character is that incredibly manic laugh.

Over the years, fans have often asked Hamill to recreate the iconic laugh at conventions and panels he is a part of. Well now, Hamill offers a little instruction on how to do it. In a recent interview with Wired Autocomplete, the actor shared:

“I’m being asked to. I’ll be at the grocery store. It could be Toys “R” Us. ‘Do the laugh. Do the laugh’ Well first you gotta warm up. It’s like a car engine. If you just tear, your throat will hurt. Also, there’s no subtle way to do it. So, I’m standing in a Toys “R” Us laughing maniacally and people say, giving me worried looks like, ‘What’s that old man doing to that poor 10-year-old?’ But I’m often asked to do it.”

You can see him doing it at 2:26 in the video below:

Hamill has previously spoken about his future as The Joker and said he “doubts he’ll ever reprise the role without Conroy there to trade lines with.” He said:

“They would call and say, ‘They want you to be the Joker.’ And my only question was, ‘Is Kevin Batman?’ If they said yes, I’d say, “I’m in.” We were like partners. We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn’t seem to be a Batman for me.

Conroy and Hamill have been with each other every step of the way with these characters over the course of 30 years. It’s kind of sad that we’ll never see Hamill voice the character again. Who knows, though, maybe one day it will happen again.
