The film depicts the historic ‘Honno-ji Incident’ of 1582, “when an important vassal of Oda Nobunaga rebelled and forced his master to commit hara-kiri in Kyoto. The reasons for the riot and whether Akechi Mitsuhide was indeed the ringleader have been debated ever since.
The film is said to “explore the ambitions, betrayals and fates of various characters, including warlords, ninjas, itinerant artists and peasants, and bring out the essence of Kitano’s world, including intense violence and humor dark”.
The director shared in a press conference: “If possible, I hope this film is a success and I hope to be able to make more. When you think of period dramas, you tend to think of period dramas as historical dramas, but they’re all about beautiful success stories and they don’t depict the dirty parts and jobs of people. I’ve done it. It took a lot of effort to complete it, but I think I managed it thanks to the staff and cast.
Kadokawa’s Natsuno Takeshi, who will distribute the film in Japan, said, “It’s a rare film, on a similar scale to Akira Kurosawa’s The seven samurai AND Kagemushawith a tragicomic quality that seems Shakespearean.
It looks like the film will be an amazing cinematic experience. Watch the trailer!
